Sand-Based Thermal Energy Storage technology validated at Nokian Panimo Brewery.

Low-cost and decarbonized process heat with sand-in-motion™ thermal energy storage

TheStorage converts renewable energy into heat, stores it in sand, and delivers it as industrial steam on demand. It helps you to optimize your heat processes and allows you to utilize low-cost electricity periods in the most cost-efficient way. It is great in serving both  needs and continuous non-interruptive processes.

TheStorage in different industries

TheStorage Thermal Energy Storage integrates with existing production systems to deliver clean steam across multiple industries.

Food & Beverage

Steam

Steam is the primary source of process heat in food and beverage production. It is used for cooking, pasteurization, evaporation, and drying at temperatures typically between 100°C and 200°C. This range also fits well with what TheStorage's thermal energy storage can deliver.

Typical process requirements

Temperatures

150°C to 250°C

Delivery medium

Steam

Integration

Seamless fit to existing steam network

Food grade steam available.

Building materials

Steam

Building materials production runs on drying and heat treatment: aggregates, insulation, boards, plaster and mineral products all need process heat between 100 °C and 300 °C, some higher. These are batch and semi-continuous cycles with sharp, repeated peaks in demand; exactly the pattern a thermal store is built to absorb.

Built for sharp, repeated batch peaks

Displaces gas and oil-fired process heat

Chemicals

Steam

Hot Oil

Chemical production needs precise, uninterrupted heat across a wide band — reactor and jacket heating, distillation, evaporation, drying and calcination. TheStorage delivers steam up to 550 °C and thermal oil up to 350 °C from the same store, holding setpoints steady while decoupling your heat supply from fuel markets.

Sand is inert, non-toxic and non-corrosive

Plastics

Steam

Hot Oil

Polymer processing runs on tightly controlled heat. Extrusion and compounding sit between 160 °C and 300 °C, and the thermal oil loops that serve presses, dies, rolls and curing ovens operate up to 350 °C. Stored renewable heat replaces fired heaters and gas without changing the line.

Pharmaceuticals

Steam

Parmaceutical plants run on clean utilities. Sterilisation-in-place uses saturated steam above 120 °C, and the same steam heats the water for clean-in-place cycles and the air for drying. All of it has to be available on demand, every shift, without interruption.

Other Industries

Steam

Hot Oil

Around 80% of industrial heat still comes from burning fossil fuels, and much of that duty is served by steam or thermal oil. If your process needs steam up to 550 °C or hot oil up to 350 °C — textiles, minerals, ingredients, laundries, district heat — TheStorage is likely a fit. Tell us your temperature, pressure, and load profile.
